I had a request for a sympathy card for the death of a pet…so sad.  I remember when my dog (Schaeffer) died a couple of years ago I was so heartbroken.  She gave me 15 years of joy and was such a clever and funny dog.

Anyway, I wanted to make sure that the card I created was somber enough for the moment yet somewhat happy too – to show that the giver understands the recipient’s sadness but that loving a pet brings joy for however long we are lucky to have them in our lives.

Fortunately, Mercy on SCS posted a card today with a PERFECT layout and I shamelessly CASEd it (I did make lots of changes but the layout was purely inspired by her card)  If you’ve never checked out her stuff, I just recently came across her blog and she is beyond talented.  Here‘s a link (but please don’t stop visiting me!)

On to my card:

I used Basic Grey paper and some Bazzil cardstock.  There’s also a strip of kraft cardstock hiding under the rippled ribbon. (and to answer a question – you do NOT need a sewing machine to do this…just a line of strong doublesided tape like scor-tape.  Simply put down a line of tape and adhere the end of the ribbon to it, make loops and press each loop down into the tape before forming the next one – easy, quick and cute!)

I splattered a little purple ink on the card for some added interest (and simply because I like using my spritzer!) and paper pierced the edges because it looked so nice on Mercy’s card.  The card is not quite as bright in real life as it is in the above picture.  There’s a shade too much red in the shot but I’m just going to leave it as is.  You still get the idea.

The image is coloured with colouring pencils and OMS (the pet in question is a Yellow Lab) and I added a few pearls simply because I know the customer likes the look of them and it will make her happy to see them on the card she is giving her friend.

Lastly, I used the sentiment “thinking of you” instead of “With Sympathy”.  I just find that a bit too sad to use on a card and will avoid it unless someone specifically wants me to go with it…

If you do have a dog or cat or other pet in your life, take a moment today to give it a little extra attention and tell them that you love them.  It will make their day and make you feel a little happier today too!
